But aside from being available in larger wheel sizes, most are functionally the same as a normal car tire. Passenger car tires (rated “P”) can be used on SUVs so long as their load ratings match the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended specification. ![]() In general, tires manufactured for SUVs and crossovers have higher load ratings to safely handle the increased weight of these vehicles. If you are unsure of the size or type of tire, it’s best to check what is currently on your vehicle, check your owner’s manual or use Tire Rack to find the original tires that were installed on your vehicle when new. For example, a 17-inch tire should be mounted to a 17-inch wheel. Whichever you choose, the tire should be the same size diameter as the wheel.
